Update July 22, 2011 5 p.m. – A fatality has been confirmed.  No further details are yet available.

July 22, 2011 (Pine Valley) 12:20 a.m. – More than an hour after a car plunged off an embankment, authorities on scene are still awaiting for a Life Flight helicopter to arrive. The accident is now being described as a possible fatality.

According to the CHP website, a silver sedan was reported overturned on eastbound I-8 near the Pine Valley Bridge at 11:02 p.m. A rural patrol officer advised that a vehicle was down an embankment and reported calling out, but receiving no answer. It is unclear whether this is a second vehicle, or the same one.

A Cal Fire truck responded but also reportedly found no one in the area. After shutting down the number one lane, authorities finally made contact with a witness.

U.S. Border Patrol was summoned but dispatch indicated Border Patrol could not get further east than Otay Mountain due to weather.

At 12:09 p.m., CHP’s site advised that an ASTREA Life Flight helicopter is now inbound.
