November 29, 2011 — University of California regents approved raises for several high-level employees during their meeting Monday.  Here are more details about the raises they approved. The first two batches are executives whose salaries are paid for with state funds.

Protesters disrupt University of California Regents, but peaceful mood prevails (Sacramento Bee)
 
November 29, 2011 — Shouting protesters interrupted the University of California regents’ meeting on Monday, but the mood was generally peaceful as students criticized officials’ response to the use of police force and implored regents to back raising taxes on the wealthy to fund higher education.

November 29, 2011 — San Diego Gas & Electric has until the end of Wednesday to complete four relatively short, overhead sections of the 117-mile transmission line known as the Sunrise Powerlink. An agreement with state and federal regulators places those areas off limits from Dec. 1 through June 30.

Police say OT for “Occupy” is $144,000 (San Diego Union-Tribune)
 
November 22, 2011 — The city’s police department said Tuesday it paid $143,918 in overtime costs for four major operations during the Occupy San Diego protests against corporate greed that began Oct. 7 at Civic Center Plaza.
The overtime covers four periods of beefed-up patrols: a march on the first night that drew 1,500 demonstrators and police sweeps of the area on Oct. 14, Oct. 28 and Nov. 16.

Firm pulls plug on wind farm near Winters, citing risk to birds (Sacramento Bee)
November 23, 2011 — A San Francisco company said it has abandoned plans for a large-scale wind farm near Winters because the turbines could have harmed golden eagles, bald eagles and other local bird species.
Pattern Energy Group LP said the 100-megawatt project would have provided enough energy to light about 44,000 homes and would have created as many as 200 construction jobs.

Wind projects spur alarm among Indians (San Diego Union-Tribune)
 
November 5, 20– Rattling gourds and scattering acorn dust, a small clutch of Native Americans recently staged a sacred ceremony atop a tiny mesa on the eastern side of the rocky divide between San Diego and Imperial counties.
The late-morning gathering marked the emergence of a rare alliance.

Tribes say no to wind farm (Imperial Valley Press)
 
October 23, 2011 — Eight Native American tribes gathered here for a spiritual ceremony scheduled to last all weekend to bring awareness about the possible disturbance of artifacts and ceremonial grounds by a proposed windmill project.
The Ocotillo Express project is a 158-wind-turbine development proposed for mostly public land about 5 miles north from here.

Sweetwater bans charter school teams from league (San Diego Union-Tribune)
November 25, 2011 — As part of its campaign to attract more middle school students to its schools, the Sweetwater Union High School District has directed the South Bay Family YMCA to drop charter schools and private schools in the area from a regional middle school sports league.
Superintendent Ed Brand said that he wanted his district’s middle schools to offer the sports program as a benefit not available at the nondistrict schools, including charters run in neighboring districts including the Chula Vista Elementary and South Bay Union school districts.

Charter school parents blast district: exclusionary policy at Sweetwater decried (San Diego Union-Tribune)
November 25, 2011 — Parents of charter school students in South Bay demanded Wednesday that the Sweetwater Union High School District rescind what they say is an unlawful new policy that limits the number of Sweetwater students who are guaranteed admission to San Diego State University.
In October, the district announced that students who attend seventh and eighth grade at charter schools outside Sweetwater would be excluded from its entrance agreement with San Diego State University, known as the Compact for Success.

72-year-old pleads not guilty to hit and run case involving toddler (La Mesa Patch)
 
November 22, 2011 — A 72-year-old El Cajon man has pleaded not guilty to felony hit-and-run in connection with a Fletcher Parkway accident that severely injured a wandering 2-year-old.

Charles Herman Hurst, the defendant in the Aug. 25 incident, was arraigned Nov. 9—accused of being the driver of a 2007 Volkswagen Passat station wagon that hit the boy while crossing Fletcher Parkway near Trolley Court, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

 Grossmont Hospital preps for major overhaul (San Diego Union-Tribune)
 
November 23, 2011 — Voter-backed bond money in hand, East County’s lone hospital is being prepped for major surgery.
The public agency that owns and leases out Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa is about to launch $225 million in improvements aimed at modernizing the hilltop medical complex and broadening patient services.
