Story by Liz Alper Photo:  Andrew McCutchen hit three home runs in a four-home run game for Pittsburgh.  Via @Pirates on Twitter July 30, 2017 (San Diego) – The Padres looked phenomenal in last night’s win over the Bucs and that allowed them to win the series.  They’d go for the sweep today with Pirates ace Gerrit Cole on the mound against Clayton Richard. Immediately, Andrew McCutchen appeared, knocking out a solo homer in the first to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way for a while, but in the sixth, the Pirates had their way with the Padres again.  Jose Osuna tripled past Manuel Margot, scoring two runs.  Jordy Mercer singled to score Osuna, all these runs coming with nobody out.  When it was all said and done, the Pirates bumped up their lead to 4-0. Dusty Coleman finally put the Padres on the board in the seventh with his second major league home run, a blast to straightaway center that McCutchen couldn’t catch and the Pirates led 4-1. But McCutchen brought the Bucs back to a four-run lead with a center field home run blast for his second home run of the day to make it 5-1 Pirates. Josh Bell added another home run in the ninth.  McCutchen hit the hat trick home run off the right field foul pole–the fourth Pirates home run of the day–to give the Buccos the 7-1 win and help them avoid the sweep. The Pads get a day off before hosting an American League foe on Tuesday, the Minnesota Twins.  The game will be on FS1, not FSSD.  First pitch is at 7:10 p.m.  Jose Berrios will start for the Twins against Jhoulys Chacin. Transactions: Jabari Blash and Kevin Quackenbush optioned to El Paso Yangervis Solarte and Austin Hedges reinstated from disabled list

TRUMP CALL FOR VIOLENCE BY POLICE DRAWS CONDEMNATION

By Miriam Raftery Photo: Screenshot, the Washington Post July 30, 2017 (San Diego) — Law enforcement leaders across the nation are denouncing remarks made by President Donald Trump that critics say encourages police brutality. View video of Trump’s remarks. Here is what President Trump said while speaking to law enforcement officers at Suffolk County Community College in New York: “When you guys put somebody in the car and you’re protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over? Like, don’t hit their head, and they just killed somebody — don’t hit their head,” Trump continued. “I said, you can take the hand away, okay?” The Suffolk County Police Department issued a statement afterwards making clear that it “will not tolerate roughing up of prisoners.” Locally, Sheriff candidate Dave Myers issued this statement.  “Sheriff Gore has been, but I’m not staying silent.  Our police officers are strong civil servants and they deserve better leadership at the top. This harmful rhetoric puts our deputies in danger while serving their communities.” Myers is a commander in the Sheriff’s department with 32 years of experience in law enforcement. Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, told radio station WTOP  “The last thing we need is a green light from the president of the United States for officers to use unnecessary force.” The President’s remarks arguably were a crime under New York law: “A person is guilty of inciting to riot when one urges ten or more persons to engage in tumultuous and violent conduct of a kind likely to create public alarm.” § 240.08 of the N.Y. Penal Law.

Story by Liz Alper Photo:  Another impressive outing for Dinelson Lamet; six innings, two hits, two runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.  Via @Padres on Twitter July 29, 2017 (San Diego) – The Padres put in a lot of effort last night and are feeling pretty good about themselves (as they should) after a 3-2 come-from-behind win against the Pirates.  Now it was time for game two.  Ivan Nova started on the hill for Pittsburgh against Dinelson Lamet. sThe Padres got a good head start.  Jose Pirela tripled in the first to score Manuel Margot and Hector Sanchez doubled to score Pirela and the Padres jumped out to a 2-0 lead out of the gate. The Padres were looking like the Red Sox all game long.  Hunter Renfroe doubled in the fourth to score Cory Spangenberg to make it 3-0. Margot continued to be a force as he homered in the fifth to make the score 4-0. The Pirates started to mount a comeback in the seventh with David Freese’s single that scored Andrew McCutchen.  Francisco Cervelli grounded into a double play that allowed Josh Bell to score, but that was all the Bucs would get and the Padres took game two and the series with a 4-2 win. The series finale is tomorrow at 1:40 p.m.  Bucs ace Gerrit Cole starts against Clayton Richard.
