NEWCOMERS’ COLLABORATIVE WORKSHOP IN EL CAJON DREW OVER 100 PARTICIPANTS

Source: Newcomers’ Collaborative November 20, 2016 (El Cajon) — On Saturday, November 5th, 2016, 91 Spanish Speakers and at least 24 children attended a resource event coordinated by the Newcomers’ Collaborative, a workgroup of the El Cajon Collaborative. The event provided an opportunity for newcomers to browse local resources and attend workshops on navigating the education system, immigration and civic engagement, Child Welfare Services, domestic violence, equal housing rights and employment. Attendees were also able to apply for public benefits such as Cal-Fresh and Medi-Cal on-site, or ask questions regarding their eligibility or specific case. The event boasted entertainment by EJE Folklorico dancers and Native American drumming, free childcare and lunch from Salsa Mexican Restaurant. Resource tables were available throughout the day and highlighted information such as job-seeking, legal aid, youth services and much more. The Newcomers’ Collaborative is focused on addressing the unique needs of newcomers to the United States, such as accessing health care, public benefits, navigating the school system and adjusting to their new culture and lifestyle. El Cajon is home to a large population of immigrants and refugees, and San Diego County as a whole hosts many different cultures, upsurged in part due to proximity to the Mexican border. The Newcomers’ Collaborative looks at gaps in services, barriers to accessing services and works to fill these gaps and provide resources to new arrivals. The members of the Collaborative are agencies that work directly with newcomers, but meetings are open to anyone who is interested in assisting families and individuals navigate their new community. East County, particularly El Cajon, has seen a large growth of refugees. Recent statistics have shown that El Cajon is now home to the largest population of Middle Eastern refugees, mainly from Iraq. The El Cajon Collaborative formed a working group focused on the unique needs of our newcomers. WINTER STORM TO BRING HEAVY RAIN TONIGHT AND MONDAY

East County News Service November 20, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) – The National Weather Service is forecasting a winter-like storm system will arrive Sunday and continue through the day on Monday. The brunt of this storm system will come after dark Sunday evening, and continue through Monday morning. A wind advisory is also in effect for mountain and desert areas in San Diego County, where gusts up to 55 miles per hour may occur. Pockets of heavy rain in the mountains will be a concern for recent wildfire burn scars, and may produce debris flows. Urbanized street flooding will also be possible. Accumulating snow is expected above 6000 feet, especially in the San Bernardino Mountains, where snow could bring travel delays and restrictions. The storm system is predicted to exit the region Monday afternoon.

Courtesy goaztecs.com November 19, 2016 (Alberquerque) – In its only contest against New Mexico during the 2016 season, San Diego State came up on the short end of a three-set match as it fell in Albuquerque Saturday afternoon by set scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-23. The loss ended a short two-match win streak for the Aztecs, whose overall record fell to 16-15 as their Mountain West ledger dropped to 8-9. New Mexico, meanwhile, improved to 16-15 overall and 6-11 in conference play. Outside hitter Alexandra Psoma was the lone SDSU player to finish in double figures in kills as she ended the day with 10. She also recorded a block, a dig and a service ace. Alexis Cage finished with nine kills and Deja Harris eight over the three sets. Cage added three blocks and three digs to her final stat line while Harris had a pair of blocks and an assist. The twosome hit .333 and .375 for the match respectively. Libero Devyn Pritchard and defensive specialist had nine digs apiece while setter Lauren Utchen had 30 assists along with seven digs, two blocks and a service ace. The opening set was close early with New Mexico leading 6-5. At that point the Lobos ran off seven straight points to go up 13-6 and essentially take control of the contest. UNM built its advantage to as many as nine points at 20-11 before securing a seven-point victory. Emma Fuzie’s three kills were the most by an Aztec in the set. The second set saw eight tied scores and five lead changes before the home side went ahead for good at 16-15. SDSU was still within a point at 18-17, but the Lobos slowly pulled away to capture the set by six points. Harris led the Aztecs with five kills and a .833 hitting percentage in the set. In the third set, UNM scored the opening two points and led the reminder of the contest. The Lobos built a quick six-point lead at 8-2 and the Aztecs still trailed by five at 19-14 late in the set.
