PADRES BLOW 10-RUN LEAD, LOSE SERIES 3-1 AGAINST SEATTLE

By Liz Alper Photo courtesy @Padres on Twitter   June 2, 2016 (San Diego) – The Mariners and Padres played the last game of their split home-at-home series tonight.  Wade Miley took the mound for Seattle against Colin Rea for San Diego.  What started as a normal ballgame devolved into utter chaos. The Mariners struck in the first again and this time, it was Kyle Seager who hit a single to drive in Robinson Cano and make the score 1-0 Seattle. Just like last night, though, the Padres tied the game at one on Matt Kemp’s single in their half of the first. Yangervis Solarte scored on Derek Norris’ single and the Padres took the lead 2-1.  Adam Rosales looped a single to shallow right center to score two and the Padres went up 4-1.   The Mariners got a run back in the fourth with Nelson Cruz’s solo homer and the Padres’ lead was cut to two at 4-2.   But the Padres regained a three-run lead in their half of the fourth on Jon Jay’s looper to center that drove in Rosales for a 5-2 lead.   In the fifth, Alexei Ramirez singled and drove in Solarte and the Padres took a 6-2 lead.  Miley balked, scoring Norris and the Padres went up 7-2.  Jay singled again, driving in Rosales and San Diego went up 8-2.  Wil Myers scored two and the Padres’ lead extended into double digits, 10-2.  With the bases juiced, Melvin Upton Jr. singled and drove in two more and the Padres led by 10, 12-2.     In the sixth, Seager drove in two for the Mariners on a double that made the score 12-4 Padres.  After a pitching change, Korean slugger Dae-Ho Lee destroyed a ball to left field off of Brad Hand, a three-run homer that made the score 12-7 Padres.     In the seventh with the bases full of Mariners, Seager singled and drove in two runs and the Padres led by three, 12-9.  Lee singled off of reliever Brandon Maurer and drove in Cano and suddenly, the Padres’ 10-run lead was cut to two, 12-10.  Chris Ianetta singled and scored Seager and suddenly, it was a one-run ballgame, 12-11.  As predicted, the Mariners tied the game on Stefen Romero’s single that drove in Lee and just like that, it was 12-12.  I wonder if anyone saw this coming.  Then the Mariners took the lead on Shawn O’Malley’s single to score Ianetta and it was 13-12 Seattle.   The Mariners made it 14-12 after Romero scored on Norichika Aoki’s single.  Franklin Gutierrez added two more.  16-12 Mariners.     In the Padres’ half of the seventh, Ramirez singled on a generous hop and drove in Matt Kemp and the score was narrowed to 16-13 Mariners.  But there would be no reverse comeback this time for the Padres.   Seattle scored nine runs in the seventh inning to win the game, making them the first team to complete a 10-run comeback since the Oakland Athletics in 2009.  This the biggest blown lead that the Padres have suffered in franchise history; their last big blown lead was in 1987 when they blew a nine-run lead against the Atlanta Braves.   The Colorado Rockies are coming to town tomorrow night.  The first pitch is at 7:40.  Drew Pomeranz will get the start against Chris Rusin for Colorado.

TRUMP CALLS CLINTON LIAR FOR SAYING HE’S BACKED NUKES FOR JAPAN, BUT HE DID – IN AT LEAST 3 INTERVIEWS WITH MAJOR MEDIA

By Miriam Raftery; Chisato Iverson, ECM intern, also contributed to this report Photo: Screenshot on CNN today June 2, 2016 (San Diego) – In a speech on foreign policy today in San Diego,  former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton slammed her rival in the presidential campaign, Donald Trump for suggesting  that America should encourage Japan “to get nuclear weapons, and said this about a war between Japan and North Korea—and I quote, `If they do, they do. Good luck, enjoy yourself, folks.’  I wonder if he even realizes he’s talking about nuclear war.”  Trump, responding to a similar statement by Clinton in recent days, called her remarks “such lies about my foreign policy, that they said I want Japan to get nuclear weapons. Give me a break” during a speech in Sacramento.  He doubled-down during his speech in San Diego Friday, insisting that Clinton “was saying that I want Japan to arm with nuclear weapons. I never said that.” But fact-checking by CNN and Politifact prove that either Trump has had a memory lapse, or intentionally tried to mislead the public about his past statements on arming Japan to develop nuclear weapons, an action barred under since World War II. Following news that North Korea has developed nuclear weapons, CNN’ s Anderson Cooper asked Trump on March 29 about his stance on the issue.  Trump replied, “At some point we have to say, you know what, we’re better off if Japan protects itself against this maniac in North Korea.”  Cooper pressed Trump on whether that includes nuclear weapons. He gave several affirmative replies including “it’s going to happen anyway” and “wouldn’t you rather in a certain sense have Japan have nuclear weapons?” CNN reported. Politifact reports that In an April 3 Fox News interview with Chris Wallace, Trump remarked, “So, North Korea has nukes.  Japan has a problem with that…Maybe they would in fact be better off if they defend themselves from North Korea.” Wallace pushed, “With nukes?”  Trump fired back, “Maybe they would be better off—including with nukes, yes, including with nukes.”  Trump earlier made clear he was leaving the nuclear option for Japan on the table during a New York Times interview, according to Politifact, which rated Trump’s statements on the issue “mostly false.” Nuclear policy expert Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association, stated bluntly that as a result of Trump’s inflammatory statements, “Our allies in Japan and the rest of Asia are already alarmed by those statements.”  CNN repots that Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzon Abe voiced concerns as well, stating that “Whoever will become the next president of the United States, the Japan-U.S. alliance is the cornerstone of Japan’s diplomacy.”    Japan, the only nation ever to suffer the devastation of  nuclear bombs during the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II, has had a pacifist constitution and a policy opposing use of nuclear weapons ever since. Japan’s Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida state emphatically, “It is impossible that Japan will arm itself with nuclear weapons.” Daniel Pinkston, North East Asia Deputy Project Director with the International Crisis Group in Seoul, South Korea warns that Trump’s belligerent statements could embolden North Korea even further. Whether or not Trump wins the presidency, Pinkston concludes, “He is already doing damage to the U.S. reputation internationally, and damaging U.S. security interests.”
