THUNDERSTORMS, HIGH HEAT ON THE HORIZON THIS WEEK
By Miriam Raftery File photo: Thunderclouds over Lakeside, by Billy Ortiz July 18, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) – An upper level trough over the Gulf of California tonight will move northward across Northern Baja, then sweep into Southern California tonight and Saturday. Thunderstorms with dry lightning are possible on Saturday morning, mainly over the mountains. Heavy rain producing thunderstorms are more likely to occur during the afternoon and early evening hours. Lightning may ignite fires and heavy rain could produce localized flooding. Downdraft wind gusts of 35 mph or more are possible during the storms. Forecasters also warn of high heat next week, when a large area of high pressure will build over the West, bringing warming each day Tuesday through Thursday. By Wednesday and Thursday, maximum temps will be 5-10 degrees above average, soaring into triple digits in desert areas. Heat related concerns will be highest on Thursday and Friday in the inland areas, with forecasts of 100 to 108 in high deserts, 108 to 115 in low deserts, and in the mountain areas, 85 to 92 degrees. An extended period of hot weather could trigger heat exhaustion and/or heat stroke for susceptible people. The information in this forecast was provided by Stephen Harrison, meteorologist and general forecaster, and Mark Moede with the National Weather Service. CATS GALORE: CATS ALL OVER THE PLACE
July 18, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) – It’s raining cats – and more cats – over at the County animal shelters. To help ease this overabundance, the shelters are offering up a special to help these felines find their forever homes. All cats – including kittens – are available through the end of this month for a “Your Price is Right” special. There’s no minimum amount required, just a you-name-it donation and promise of a good home. If you fall in love with two, that’s OK! Take Kit and Kaboodle! Animal Services Deputy Director Dan DeSousa says, “We are inundated with cats and now is a great time to adopt because there are so many to choose from – all sizes, shapes, colors and models! Our numbers change every day but I would say among the three shelters, we have almost 500 cats.” Each adoption includes vaccinations, a free vet exam, microchip and spay or neuter. Kittens are available to take home, but DeSousa thinks adult cats are just as much fun to adopt. “Adult cats are great because you can see exactly what they’ll look like and how their personality has developed,” he said. “They’re typically beyond the rambunctious juvenile stage.” The “Your Price is Right” special on cats at the County’s three shelters, Bonita, Gaines Street and Carlsbad, goes through July 31.

SENIORS GROUP AT HEALTH CARE LIBRARY TO HOST DISCUSSION ON ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27
July 18, 2014 (La Mesa)-The Grossmont Healthcare District’s Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library, 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa, will host a free senior discussion group program titled “Alzheimer’s Disease and Clinical Trials,” from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27. The public is invited to attend and RSVP is not required. The speaker will be Mark Dobrina, lead clinical trials specialist, Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital Research Dept. The discussion on Aug. 27 will include a progress report on Alzheimer’s research and what happens when people volunteer for clinical trials. The Alzheimer’s Association reports a person develops Alzheimer’s disease every 67 seconds, and it affects more than 5 million Americans. Scientists are making strides to help diagnose, slow and treat the disease, but Alzheimer’s research can move forward only if people are willing to volunteer for clinical trials and studies. The Herrick Library, which opened in 2002, is a consumer health public library specializing in health research information, accessible both on-site and via the Internet. The library is operated by the Grossmont Healthcare District, a public agency that supports health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County. For more information, phone the library at (619) 825‑5010 or visit www.herricklibrary.org.
