READERS CALENDAR FOR WEEK OF JULY 21
July 23 (Tuesday, 7:30 pm) — Warwick’s will host Founder and CEO of Harvard Cookin’ Girl Bibi Kasrai, who will discuss and sign her book The Spice Whisperer. This event is free and open to the public. In order to be signed, The Spice Whisperer must be purchased from Warwick’s. Background: In The Spice Whisperer, Kasrai’s literary debut, she has combined both to come up with a genre as unique as herself. The daughter of famed Iranian Poet Siavosh Kasrai, Bibi Kasrai is also active in reviving her father’s works on the stage. After receiving a Harvard MBA, she turned her back on corporate America at the height of her career to found a children’s cooking school, which has since expanded into an all-ages operation in La Jolla, CA. Kasrai’s novel business plan helped her create a cult following and was soon bombarded with requests for her memoirs and recipes. Beginning with memories of an Iranian childhood where her grandmother cooked while her parents supported her dreams of higher education and then transitioning to the darker days of the family’s escape to Afghanistan, her days as a student in Moscow, and the long road to finding her passion through cooking, each section reflects the tragedy, comedy, and recipes of her life. The book is a tribute to her culture and the many cultures she has encountered living abroad, to cooking with love and bringing people of all backgrounds and beliefs together. In order to be signed, the author’s most current book must be purchased from Warwick’s. Background: In the tradition of Kristin Hannah and Karen Joy Fowler, Meg Waite Clayton, bestselling author of The Wednesday Sisters, returns with an enthralling new novel of mothers, daughters, and the secrets and dreams passed down through generations. It is early evening when Hope Tantry arrives at the small cottage in England’s pastoral Lake District where her mother, Ally, spent the last years of her life. Ally-one of a close-knit group of women who called themselves the Wednesday Sisters-had used the cottage as a writer’s retreat while she worked on her unpublished biography of Beatrix Potter, yet Hope knows little about her mother’s time there. Traveling with Hope are friends Anna Page and Julie, first introduced as little girls in The Wednesday Sisters, now grown women grappling with issues of a different era. They’ve come to help Hope sort through her mother’s personal effects, yet what they find is a tangled family history-one steeped in Lake District lore. Tucked away in a hidden drawer, Hope finds a stack of Ally’s old notebooks, all written in a mysterious code. As she, Julie, and Anna Page try to decipher Ally’s writings-the reason for their encryption, their possible connection to the Potter manuscript-they are forced to confront their own personal struggles: Hope’s doubts about her marriage, Julie’s grief over losing her twin sister, Anna Page’s fear of commitment in relationships. And as the real reason for Ally’s stay in England comes to light, Hope, Julie, and Anna Page reach a new understanding about the enduring bonds of family, the unwavering strength of love, and the inescapable pull of the past. PHOTOS OF THE WEEK: COOPER’S HAWKS
July 22, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) – Bird Talk columnist Greg Dunne shared these images. He writes, “Out at my six-mile walk around Lake Murray Thursday towards the dam, I was treated to five fledgling Cooper’s Hawks. I was able to observe them for quite a while.” The darker-backed Cooper’s Hawks are the adults, he noted. “I could also tell the fledglings by their behavior, hopping around from branch to branch, making noise with their screeching, and just seeming unsure what to do next, while there was one that seemed a bit annoyed at all this commotion, and was a bit darker on the back side, and was a bit more poised than the young ones. A bit far away for good photos, but I really had a good time watching them.”
