The recalled products were distributed to retail establishments nationwide. LIBYAN LEADER CAPTURED AT SAN DIEGO BORDER

Printer-friendly version  By Justin Time   April 1, 2011 (Campo) – Shortly before dawn this morning, U.S. Border Patrol agents made a startling discovery along the border south of Campo in San Diego’s East County.   Alerted by Minutemen who observed unusual activity near the border fence, Border Patrol agents used infra-red night-vision technology and ground-penetrating radar to confirm location of a new tunnel from Mexico into the U.S.  Initially, agents suspected drug smuggling. But in hauling out the leader, they nabbed one of the world’s most wanted despots: Libyan Colonel Moammar Kadhafi.      Kadhafi fled his homeland after his forces massacred civilians, prompting United Nations-backed coalition attacks, an escalating civil war, and global calls for his ouster. He told officials that he hoped to make his new home in San Diego after hearing positive stories about our region from his son, who recently attended college here before returning to Libya to help combat rebel forces.   Now in detention at the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) immigration detention facility in Otay Mesa, Kadhafi has asked American officials to grant him asylum in the U.S. However, a White House source has informed ECM that Kadhafi will instead be deported to the Hague, where he will stand trial for war crimes in the World Court.   Kadhafi’s bank accounts have been frozen. However , under interrogation a Kadhafi guard detained at the border with Kadhafi disclosed that a Libyan advance team stashed millions of dollars worth of ill-gotten gain for the deposed ruler (including cash, gold and jewels) somewhere in the rugged high desert mountains of East County.   In response, Fox TV announced immediate launch of a reality show set in East County, titled “Search for the Lost Libyan Treasure.”   HAPPY APRIL FOOLS’ DAY!   To read more April Fool’s Day “news” from East County Magazine’s special April 1st, 2011 edition, please visit: http://www.eastcountymagazine.org/taxonomy/term/7443   Printer-friendly version

HOG WILD: COUNTY HOLDS 1ST ANNUAL FERAL PIG ROUNDUP & RODEO

Printer-friendly version  By Buck N. Hamm   April 1, 2011 (Lakeside) – San Diego County officials today hosted a special event aimed at culling herds of wild pigs that are rampaging through the backcountry, destroying native habitat.   “Modeled after the Bureau of Land Management’s popular program for reducing surplus wild mustangs on public lands, our County has teamed up with Cleveland National Forest and local Harley Davidson clubs to sponsor the first annual Hog Wild pig roundup and run,” Supervisor Dianne Jacob announced, cutting a ribbon as a herd of stampeding pigs raced through the streets of Lakeside. Plump porkers were rounded up on U.S. Forest Service lands along Boulder Creek, branded by 4-H students, then herded by volunteer cowboys through rugged canyon terrain. Next, the squealing swine were swum across El Capitan Reservoir and then trotted across the El Monte Valley. From there, Harley Davidson motorcyclists on their two-wheeled “Hogs” ran the wild pigs through the streets of downtown Lakeside. Crowds cheered along the stampede route, which ended at the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds. Prime porkers were selected to compete in special rodeo events including bucking boar riding, a pig-roping contest, and a hog-calling competition led by Supervisor Bill Horn. In addition, a public auction was held. Winning bidders pledged to protect their porkers from harm, as part of a USFS settlement of demands by PETA protesters . (Counter-protesters in aprons , brandishing BBQ forks, demanded a pig roast.) Like the wild mustangs culled from our public lands, these savage boars and sows may be gentled, trained, saddled and bridled for use as companion animals or riding stock. “We are confident that this event will become an annual tradition,” Lakeside’s Chamber of Commerce president declared, “generating not only community pride, but also tourism dollars—all by bringing home the bacon.” HAPPY APRIL FOOLS’ DAY!   To read more April Fool’s Day “news” from East County Magazine’s special April 1st, 2011 edition, please visit:http://www.eastcountymagazine.org/taxonomy/term/7443 Printer-friendly version
