March 24, 2026 (Lakeside) – The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office has identified a hiker who died on El Cajon Mountain in the El Capitan County Preserve on March 22 as Johnathan L. Gorbea, 40, of Lakeside.

Gorbea was a decorated U.S. Navy veteran who also worked for the Department of Defense, according to a GoFundMe page set up by one of his cousins, which by 11:30 a.m. March 26 had raised $16,715 of $20,000 sought.

Gorbea’s family reported him missing on Sunday morning, after he failed to return from a hike he had left for on Saturday morning.

The Sheriff’s search and rescue team launched a large-scale search including deputies on the ground, a helicopter and 60 to 70 volunteers.

His body was located near one of the hiking trails just east of the trailhead around 7:30 p.m. Sunday night.

The Medical Examiner has not yet determined his cause of death, pending an autopsy.

You can visit Gorbea’s GoFundMe page here[1].

The GoFundMe page said that  “Johnathan had a deep love for nature and found peace in the outdoors, often spending his time hiking and exploring.…”

Gorbea, the GoFundMe page said, dedicated many years of his life in service to others — both as a member of the Navy and as a Department of Defense civilian.

“His commitment, work ethic and impact did not go unnoticed, as he was honored with multiple awards, including the FY24 and FY25 Navy Civilian Service Commendation Medals,” the site said.

“(Gorbea) was a father, husband, son, brother and friend. He is survived by his two children, his family and all who loved him. His sudden passing has left an unimaginable void in their lives.”
