April 30, 2015 (La Mesa) – With all the activities available this month, there has to be something for everyone here.

Events range from star gazing party on Mt. Helix to a free boot camp, s SANDAG public workshops on regional growth plans through 2050, what is arguable the community’s most popular event, the La Mesa Flag Day Parade (if you’re not in it, you’re probably watching it)… and oh, so much more.

• “San Diego Forward: The Regional Plan”[1] public workshop, May 13th at 6 p.m. at the La Mesa community center. The $200 billion, 35-year regional growth draft lays out visions for transportation, sustainability and growth in the county through 2050, including higher density land use along transportation corridors. The City of La Mesa has a number of free activities this month; for more information call 619-667-1300:

• Drowning Prevention Event[5], May 1, from 9:00 am to 1200 pm at Grossmont Center. Heartland Firefighters will teach “Compression Only” CPR and “Poolside CPR,” and Municipal Pool employees will present information on drowning and pool safety and will have sign ups available for upcoming swimming lessons.
• Community Bicycle Rodeo[6], May 2 from 9 a.m.. to noon at Nan Couts Cottage. Children of all ages are invited to attend this free event to increase their enjoyment of bicycling while enhancing safety. A series of stations will focus on important aspects of safety skills including helmet and bicycle inspections and an obstacle course. The event will wrap up with refreshments provided by the La Mesa Lions Club, and a raffle for four new bicycles with helmets, at approx. 11 a.m. Click here[7] for additional Info.
• Walking Wednesdays[8] meet up every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, to explore La Mesa’s current and future urban trail system. May 13 the route will begin at 9 a.m. at Northmont Park, 6030 Severini Drive, for approx. 2.5 miles with some hills. On May 27 the route will begin at 6:00 p.m. at The Hill’s local pub, 8758 La Mesa Boulevard
• Free Fitness Bootcamp[9], Thursday, May 14, 6:00 p.m. at the La Mesa Community Center. Instructors from Fit-X San Diego Instructors will identify exercises for all fitness levels. The Boot Camp is part of the City of La Mesa’s Live Well[10] initiative, and the third in a series of workshops covering different fitness and wellness topics. Additional workshops will occur on the following dates beginning at 6:00 pm: July 16, September 10, and November 12. For online sign up, click here[11].
• Babysitter Safety Class[12] on Saturday, May 16, from 9:30 am – 2:00 pm at La Mesa Community Services.  This is a fun hands-on community education program for youth ages 11 – 16 that covers child safety and basic care for infants and children. Class topics include: sitter safety, infant and child feeding, diapering procedures, recognizing an emergency, child and infant CPR, and basic first aid for children. Participants receive a booklet, starter first aid kit and a Babysitter certificate from The American Safety & Health Institute upon completion. The class will be taught by Lockhart Training. • La Mesa Flag Day Parade[14], May 30 at 10:00 a.m. in the La Mesa Village. One of the biggest community events of the year, if you’re not in the parade you’re probably watching it! The parade will begin from Memorial Drive and run down La Mesa Blvd. through the heart of the Village. Online donations[15] are welcome to defray the costs of hosting the Parade the City.

Other family oriented events in town:

• Spring Star Party[17] by the San Diego Astronomy Association, Saturday, May 23 at the Mt. Helix Park. Saturn will be at opposition providing for some interesting viewing. At the last Star Party guests saw Orion, Jupiter and the passing International Space Station. Parking and shuttles will be at the fire station at 10105 Vivera Drive beginning at 6:45 pm. The event is free. Bring a picnic and enjoy the sunset. Viewing will begin at 8:15 pm.
• Food Truck Thursdays at Grossmont Center[18] from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. features sweet and savory foods from some of San Diego’s local food trucks. Food trucks will be located in the parking lot in front of Walmart Garden Center and Barnes & Noble, and trucks and flavors will rotate weekly.

• Monday – Lego and Scrabble Clubs.
• Tuesday – Silver Sneaker Yoga, Baby Lapsit, Ebook Tutoring and Bilingual Storytime.
• Wednesday – Chess Club, Knitting Club, Ebook Tutoring and PJ Storytime.
• Thursday – Preschool and Teen activities.
• Friday – Toddler Storytimes.
• Saturday – Introductory Computer Classes.
